1. TET

Teacher Eligibility Test is the most well-known Indian exam, conducted by both Central and also State govt. in two levels:

Level 1 – For those aspiring to be a Primary teacher (class I to V)

Level 2 – For those aspiring to be a Secondary teacher (class VI to VIII)

It is conducted only once every year, not only by the state but also by central governments’. And lakhs of candidates appear for the same.

2. CTET

The CBSE conducts the Central Teacher Eligibility Test which helps determine whether or not a candidate is eligible to teach central govt. run schools in India. These include KVS, NVS, Central Tibetan Schools, and those under the administrative control of UTs.

Just like TET, this national teachers’ entrance test also has 2 levels and is conducted twice a year.

State Teacher Eligibility Test/ State Eligibility Test/ State Level Eligibility Test is like the name suggests a test taken by each state of the country. Like the CTET, each state also conducts a test of eligibility, qualifying which one could apply for a post of lecturer within the jurisdiction of SLET Commission’s member states.

4. NET

National Eligibility Test is conducted by CBSE on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Qualifying it determines the eligibility for the posts of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship. For this National level test, the Indian nationals appearing for it must possess a master’s degree.

5. KVS Exam

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is a national-level exam for placement in KVS schools all over the country. It helps attain teaching posts like TGTs, PGTs, PRTs, Vice Principal, Principal, and Librarian.

KVS entrance exams for teachers are conducted in two stages –

  • an offline written test (with varied patterns based on the post)
  • a face-to-face interview.

A national-level exam is conducted by National Test Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. This helps select candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and to determine the eligibility for appointment as a lecturer in Indian Universities and colleges for specific subjects. However, the award of Junior Research Fellowship depends on you being placed in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, etc.

Also, note that in order to appear for these exams one must have basic graduation or post-graduation degree with 50-55% marks.
