As per the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 and National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has decided that it is mandatory for teachers of all levels of both private and govt. schools, to have certain minimum qualifications to be eligible for a teacher's position. Hence, if you wish to teach, and often thought, how many teaching exams are there in India, here is a list for your information:

  1. TET
  2. CTET
  3. STET
  4. NET
  5. KVS Exam
  6. CSIR UGC NET

1. TET

Teacher Eligibility Test is the most well-known Indian exam, conducted by both Central and also State govt. in two levels:

Level 1 – For those aspiring to be a Primary teacher (class I to V)

Level 2 – For those aspiring to be a Secondary teacher (class VI to VIII)

It is conducted only once every year, not only by the state but also by central governments’. And lakhs of candidates appear for the same. 

2. CTET 

The CBSE conducts the Central Teacher Eligibility Test which helps determine whether or not a candidate is eligible to teach central govt. run schools in India. These include KVS, NVS, Central Tibetan Schools, and those under the administrative control of UTs.

Just like TET, this national teachers’ entrance test also has 2 levels and is conducted twice a year.

3. STET (SET/ SLET)

State Teacher Eligibility Test/ State Eligibility Test/ State Level Eligibility Test is like the name suggests a test taken by each state of the country. Like the CTET, each state also conducts a test of eligibility, qualifying which one could apply for a post of lecturer within the jurisdiction of SLET Commission’s member states. 

4. NET   

National Eligibility Test is conducted by CBSE on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Qualifying it determines the eligibility for the posts of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship. For this National level test, the Indian nationals appearing for it must possess a master’s degree.

5. KVS Exam

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is a national-level exam for placement in KVS schools all over the country. It helps attain teaching posts like TGTs, PGTs, PRTs, Vice Principal, Principal, and Librarian. 

KVS entrance exams for teachers are conducted in two stages –

  • an offline written test (with varied patterns based on the post)
  • a face-to-face interview.

6. CSIR UGC NET

A national-level exam is conducted by National Test Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. This helps select candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and to determine the eligibility for appointment as a lecturer in Indian Universities and colleges for specific subjects. However, the award of Junior Research Fellowship depends on you being placed in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, etc.

Also, note that in order to appear for these exams one must have basic graduation or post-graduation degree with 50-55% marks. Along with that they must either have a B.ed degree or be a student of the course. Bachelors of Education (B.ed) is a 2-year course that prepares for the workings of being a teacher, hence making it mandatory to have the degree. 

Once the entrance exams for teachers' training is cleared, the candidate is awarded a pass certificate, by the respective commission. This would be valid for life.
